Looking after your pet in Orihuela Costa
About 30,000 people live along Orihuela Costa's strip of coves and residential estates, in areas such as Punta Prima, La Zenia and Campoamor, and Britons are the largest foreign group. Cala Cabo Peñas, also called Cala Mosca II, is Orihuela's only dog cove and sits next to Torrevieja's dog beach; pick up after your dog, and potentially dangerous dogs must be muzzled and on a lead. To protect against leishmaniosis, spread by sand flies, use repellents, ask about vaccination and test every year.
At the cove, dogs must be microchipped and carry a pet passport, with rules signposted in Spanish and English. The regional register is RIVIA, and rabies vaccination plus echinococcosis worming are required at least yearly. Petplan pet insurance in Orihuela Costa lets you use any vet practice, in Playa Flamenca, La Zenia or Cabo Roig: you pay and we refund 100% of covered costs, minus a fixed €45 co-pay.
