Looking after your pet in Benidorm
Benidorm is a high-rise seaside city where dogs stay off the sand: a municipal bylaw bans them from its beaches all year, and the nearest dog beaches are in neighbouring towns such as Altea. Instead, there are five fenced dog parks around town and the Serra Gelada coastal path, shared with cyclists, where a lead is recommended. Guard against leishmaniosis, spread by sand flies, with repellent, vaccination advice and a yearly test.
On the paperwork side, RIVIA is the register here, and dogs, cats and ferrets need rabies vaccination and echinococcosis worming at least once a year. Pets cannot ride local buses, but taxis take them if you mention the dog and its weight when booking. Petplan pet insurance in Benidorm lets you see any vet practice, in Rincón de Loix, the Casco Antiguo or La Cala: you pay the bill and we refund 100% of covered costs, minus a fixed €45 co-pay.
Where to walk your dog

Health: what to watch for
- Canine leishmaniosis, spread by sand flies, is common across southern Spain, the Mediterranean and the Balearics. Use repellents, ask about vaccination and test yearly with your vet.
The policy asks you to keep your dog's official vaccinations up to date, including leishmaniasis. With the Health + Vaccines plan we refund the cost, up to €90 a year.
Microchips and rules
- In the Comunitat Valenciana, microchips are recorded in the Registro Valenciano de Identificación de Animales de Compañía (RIVIA).
- Dogs, cats and ferrets must be vaccinated against rabies and dewormed against echinococcosis at least yearly. RIVIA is run by the Valencian Council of Veterinary Colleges.

- Pets are not allowed on local public buses; taxis accept them if you mention the dog and its weight when booking.
- To take out a policy, your pet must be microchipped and its details must match the official register.
