How does veterinary insurance work?

- When your dog, cat or rabbit has an illness or an accident, take it to your vet so that it gets the best possible treatment.
- Send us the invoice and the vet report and we will pay the costs by bank transfer to your account.

What do you need to know about veterinary insurance?
Maximum reimbursement
This is the maximum amount an insurer will pay you each year. At Petplan we pay more than any other company in Spain, 100%, up to 3.100 € per year.
Waiting periods
The main dog, cat and rabbit insurance policies in Spain set waiting periods of 1, 2 and even 6 months for surgery. At Petplan our waiting period is 15 days for accidents and 1 month for illnesses.
Co-payment and reimbursement percentage
Before you buy, read the cover conditions of your policy carefully. There are policies that cover only 50% of the vet bill, or 70%, or 90%. At Petplan we reimburse 100%.
Reimbursement of vaccine costs
Some insurers include vaccine reimbursement compulsorily (and charge you for it). At Petplan you can add the vaccine service optionally. If your vet already includes vaccines in their prevention plan, you do not need to add it to your insurance.
Vets
Some Spanish companies work with a fixed list of approved vets, forcing the owner to visit a vet they do not know. With Petplan, you can go to whichever vet you choose.
Pre-existing conditions
No dog health insurance in Spain covers pre-existing conditions, that is, any condition your dog or cat already had before the policy was taken out. Petplan does NOT cover them either.
Medicines
Very few insurers in Spain cover medicines, so read the small print. Petplan does pay for the medicines prescribed by your vet.
Third-party liability cover for your dog or cat
Some insurers include third-party liability cover compulsorily (and charge you for it) in case your dog or cat bites someone. At Petplan you can optionally take out third-party liability insurance for only €25 a year. If your home insurance already includes third-party liability cover, there is no need to pay for it twice.

Reimbursement of veterinary costs for illness or accident
We will pay you up to an annual maximum of 3.100€ with a 100% reimbursement percentage and a 45 € co-payment per illness (not per visit).
Compensation for theft
We compensate you with the value of your dog, up to a maximum of 600€, if your dog is taken from you with violence.
Compensation for death by accident
We will pay you the value of your pet, up to a maximum of 600€, if it dies as the result of an accident.
24/7 emergency assistance, veterinary emergency service
In an emergency, if you cannot reach your usual vet, Petplan gives you a veterinary telephone assistance service available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Video call and chat service with registered vets
Video calls: the vet can see your pet directly and in real time, which makes it easier to assess wounds, lameness, how symptoms are developing or any visible change. (+ info)
Chat: lets you talk in writing with a vet and send images, videos or documents that add more information about the case. (+ info)
Compensation for death by illness
We will pay you the value of your pet, up to a maximum of 600€, if it dies of an illness.
Advertising costs if your pet is lost
We reimburse your advertising costs if your dog goes missing, up to a maximum of 600€ per year.
Euthanasia costs and disposal of the animal remains
We reimburse the cost of euthanasia and disposal of the animal remains, up to a maximum of 200€.
Boarding kennel or cattery stay
We reimburse boarding kennel or cattery costs when you have to be admitted to hospital, up to a maximum of 600€.
Optional Health + Vaccines plan
As an option, you can add the Health + Vaccines plan: we reimburse 100% of the cost of the vaccines prescribed by your vet, including the Leishmaniasis vaccine, up to a maximum of 90€ per year. It is an optional plan that renews every year together with your insurance. More information at this link.
