Looking after your pet in Jávea
Over half of Jávea's residents are foreign, mostly British, and dog walks here tend to follow clifftop paths and viewpoints rather than the beach. There are three fenced dog areas: Pou de Moro beside the River Gorgos, about 3,700 m² with shade and water; the Arenal area, with a double gate; and Duanes de la Mar near the port. Leishmaniosis, spread by sand flies, is common on the Mediterranean, so use repellent, discuss the vaccine and test yearly.
RIVIA is the regional register, and the rules call for rabies vaccination and echinococcosis worming at least once a year. Heading to the Balearics? Neighbouring Dénia has Baleària ferries with pet-friendly cabins and outdoor areas for animals. With pet insurance in Jávea from Petplan you can go to any vet practice, in the Casco Antiguo, the port area or El Arenal: pay the bill and we return 100% of covered costs, minus a fixed €45 co-pay.

Health: what to watch for
- Canine leishmaniosis, spread by sand flies, is common across southern Spain, the Mediterranean and the Balearics. Use repellents, ask about vaccination and test yearly with your vet.
The policy asks you to keep your dog's official vaccinations up to date, including leishmaniasis. With the Health + Vaccines plan we refund the cost, up to €90 a year.
Microchips and rules
- In the Comunitat Valenciana, microchips are recorded in the Registro Valenciano de Identificación de Animales de Compañía (RIVIA).
- Dogs, cats and ferrets must be vaccinated against rabies and dewormed against echinococcosis at least yearly. RIVIA is run by the Valencian Council of Veterinary Colleges.
- To take out a policy, your pet must be microchipped and its details must match the official register.
Vets and travel
- Colegio Oficial de Veterinarios de Alicante (ICOVAL) — Provincial college with a search tool for registered vets and clinics, plus information for owners.
