Looking after your pet in Altea
Altea is a whitewashed seaside town, and its pebbly L'Olla beach has a signposted dog stretch, Playa Mar y Montaña, which is also the closest option for dog owners from neighbouring Benidorm. There are no facilities. As elsewhere on the Mediterranean, sand flies spread canine leishmaniosis here, so keep up the repellent, talk to your vet about vaccination and test once a year.
Microchip details are held on RIVIA, and rabies jabs and echinococcosis deworming are required at least annually for dogs, cats and ferrets. The Alicante Veterinary College (ICOVAL) can point you to registered clinics, and if you fly, Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández airport has specific pet travel guidance. Taking out pet insurance in Altea with Petplan means you can use any practice, from the Casco Antiguo to Altea la Vella or Cap Negret. You pay the vet and get 100% of covered costs back, minus a fixed €45 co-pay.
