Looking after your pet in Marbella

Dog owners in Marbella have beach options east of the centre and near Puerto Banús: Playa de El Pinillo, by km 184 of the N-340, has dog fountains and showers, and Playa de Ventura del Mar sits in Nueva Andalucía. Away from the sand, try the pine woodland of Parque de Nagüeles. The main health risk is canine leishmaniosis, spread by sand flies, so use repellents, ask about the vaccine and test yearly.

With 31% of residents from abroad, note that dogs and cats in Andalusia must be microchipped within three months of birth and recorded on the RAIA. The Ilustre Colegio Oficial de Veterinarios de Málaga, advises on travelling with animals, and Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport is about 30 minutes' drive away. Petplan pet insurance in Marbella lets you use any vet practice, from San Pedro Alcántara to Las Chapas: pay the bill and get 100% of covered costs back, minus a fixed €45 co-pay.
