Looking after your pet in Nerja

Nerja sits at the foot of the Sierra de Almijara, and the north of the municipality lies inside the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park, cut by gorges such as the Chíllar river's. In town, two dog areas with agility equipment and fountains sit at the Ciudad Deportiva and in Parque Verano Azul. As elsewhere in southern Spain, watch for leishmaniosis, spread by sand flies: use repellent, discuss vaccination and book a yearly test.

Pets are identified through RAIA, the Andalusian register, with a microchip required within three months of birth. Since 2024 Nerja's municipal pet register has been run together with the Málaga Official Veterinary College, which supplied the Local Police with microchip readers. Taking out pet insurance in Nerja with Petplan means any vet practice in the town centre or Maro is open to you: settle the bill, then claim back 100% of covered costs, less a fixed €45 co-pay.
