Looking after your pet in Illes Balears
Four islands, four sets of rules: most beaches close to dogs in summer, so each town sets up its own dog zones. In Eivissa, Platja de ses Figueres at Talamanca is open all year; Cala Fustam, in Es Migjorn Gran, is an unspoilt cove about an hour's walk from Binigaus. Watch for two hazards: sand flies, which carry leishmaniosis, and pine processionary caterpillars, whose hairs can badly injure a dog's mouth.
Dogs must be identified on RIACIB within three months of birth; the register is run by COVIB, the Balearic Veterinary College, based in Palma. Check local bylaws before a beach day: in Eivissa, taking a dog onto the beach outside the dog zones between Easter and 31 October can mean fines of €751-3,000. With pet insurance in Illes Balears from Petplan, you can use any vet in Palma, Calvià or Ciutadella, pay the bill and get 100% of covered costs back, minus a fixed €45 co-pay.
Beaches and spaces for dogs
- Platja de ses Figueres (Talamanca)EivissaSignposted dog zone reached from Calle Benirràs, open all year; potentially dangerous dogs must be muzzled.
- Cala FustamEs Migjorn GranUnspoilt cove with no facilities; reached on foot from Binigaus (about 1 hour) or by boat.
Health: what to watch for
- Canine leishmaniosis, spread by sand flies, is common across southern Spain, the Mediterranean and the Balearics. Use repellents, ask about vaccination and test yearly with your vet.
- The pine processionary caterpillar is the main defoliator of local pine woods. Its stinging hairs can severely injure a dog's mouth and tongue, so avoid pine areas with processions.
The policy asks you to keep your dog's official vaccinations up to date, including leishmaniasis. With the Health + Vaccines plan we refund the cost, up to €90 a year.
Microchips and rules
- In the Illes Balears, microchips are recorded in the Registro de Identificación de Animales de Compañía de las Illes Balears (RIACIB).
- Dogs must be identified within three months of birth. RIACIB is run by the Balearic Veterinary College (COVIB) under an agreement with the regional government.
- Calvià: in its two dog zones, restricted-breed (PPP) dogs must always be on a lead and muzzled; all dogs need a microchip and up-to-date vaccinations.
- Eivissa town: outside the dog zones, dogs are banned from beaches from Holy Week (Easter) to 31 October, and at weekends and on public holidays the rest of the year; fines of €751-3,000.
- To take out a policy, your pet must be microchipped and its details must match the official register.
Vets and travel
- Col·legi Oficial de Veterinaris de les Illes Balears (COVIB) — Based at Av. Comte de Sallent 2, Palma; directory of registered vets and clinics.
- Baleària offers pet-friendly cabins, seats for pets up to 8 kg in a carrier and kennels on deck; your pet needs its own ticket and a valid health booklet.
