Looking after your pet in Ibiza
On Ibiza the no-dogs beach season runs from Easter to October, yet Eivissa town keeps two signposted stretches of coast open to dogs all year. Platja des Viver gives you 360 m of shoreline (lead on until you reach it), while Platja de ses Figueres at Talamanca is the other. Heartworm is more common here than in most of Spain, so stick to monthly prevention and a yearly antigen test; leishmaniosis and processionary caterpillars are risks too.
Dogs must be registered on RIACIB, run by COVIB, within three months of birth. Outside the dog zones, Eivissa fines owners €751-3,000 for taking dogs onto the beach in season, or at weekends and on public holidays the rest of the year. Petplan pet insurance in Ibiza lets you choose any vet in Eivissa, Santa Eulària des Riu or Sant Antoni de Portmany: you pay the bill, then get 100% of covered costs back, minus a fixed €45 co-pay.
Beaches and spaces for dogs
- Platja des ViverEivissaSignposted 360 m stretch open to dogs all year; lead on the way in and carry your dog's papers.
- Platja de ses Figueres (Talamanca)EivissaSignposted dog zone reached from Calle Benirràs, open all year; potentially dangerous dogs must be muzzled.
Health: what to watch for
- Heartworm, spread by mosquitoes, is more common here than in most of Spain. Monthly prevention and a yearly antigen test are recommended.
- Canine leishmaniosis, spread by sand flies, is common across southern Spain, the Mediterranean and the Balearics. Use repellents, ask about vaccination and test yearly with your vet.
- The pine processionary caterpillar is the main defoliator of local pine woods. Its stinging hairs can severely injure a dog's mouth and tongue, so avoid pine areas with processions.
The policy asks you to keep your dog's official vaccinations up to date, including leishmaniasis. With the Health + Vaccines plan we refund the cost, up to €90 a year.
Microchips and rules
- In the Illes Balears, microchips are recorded in the Registro de Identificación de Animales de Compañía de las Illes Balears (RIACIB).
- Dogs must be identified within three months of birth. RIACIB is run by the Balearic Veterinary College (COVIB) under an agreement with the regional government.
- Eivissa town: outside the dog zones, dogs are banned from beaches from Holy Week (Easter) to 31 October, and at weekends and on public holidays the rest of the year; fines of €751-3,000.
- Formentera has no official dog beaches; in season (1 May-31 October) dogs are not allowed on beaches from 9am to 9pm.
- To take out a policy, your pet must be microchipped and its details must match the official register.
Vets and travel
- Col·legi Oficial de Veterinaris de les Illes Balears (COVIB) — Based at Av. Comte de Sallent 2, Palma; directory of registered vets and clinics.
- Baleària offers pet-friendly cabins, seats for pets up to 8 kg in a carrier and kennels on deck; your pet needs its own ticket and a valid health booklet.
