Looking after your pet in Mallorca
Between May and September most of Mallorca's beaches are off-limits to dogs, but Calvià runs council-regulated dog bathing areas at Punta Marroig in Palmanova and Cala des Gats on the Costa de la Calma, both open 8am-8pm. Out of season, many towns allow dogs on a lead. Heartworm is more common here than in most of Spain, so give monthly prevention and test yearly; leishmaniosis and processionary caterpillars are risks too.
Dogs must be identified within three months of birth on RIACIB, the register run by COVIB in Palma. In Palma, dogs can ride bus route 30 to Es Carnatge on a lead, muzzled and with their vaccination card, but not the tram or metro. With Petplan pet insurance in Mallorca, you can use any vet in Palma, Inca or Manacor, pay the bill and claim back 100% of covered costs, minus a fixed €45 co-pay.
Beaches and spaces for dogs
- Punta Marroig (Palmanova)CalviàOfficial council dog zone; 8am-8pm, dogs may be off the lead inside it.
- Cala des Gats (Costa de la Calma)CalviàOfficial council dog zone; 8am-8pm; access via Calle Bellavista.
Health: what to watch for
- Heartworm, spread by mosquitoes, is more common here than in most of Spain. Monthly prevention and a yearly antigen test are recommended.
- Canine leishmaniosis, spread by sand flies, is common across southern Spain, the Mediterranean and the Balearics. Use repellents, ask about vaccination and test yearly with your vet.
- The pine processionary caterpillar is the main defoliator of local pine woods. Its stinging hairs can severely injure a dog's mouth and tongue, so avoid pine areas with processions.
The policy asks you to keep your dog's official vaccinations up to date, including leishmaniasis. With the Health + Vaccines plan we refund the cost, up to €90 a year.
Microchips and rules
- In the Illes Balears, microchips are recorded in the Registro de Identificación de Animales de Compañía de las Illes Balears (RIACIB).
- Dogs must be identified within three months of birth. RIACIB is run by the Balearic Veterinary College (COVIB) under an agreement with the regional government.
- Calvià: in its two dog zones, restricted-breed (PPP) dogs must always be on a lead and muzzled; all dogs need a microchip and up-to-date vaccinations.
- Palma: on bus route 30 (which serves Es Carnatge) dogs must be on a lead, muzzled and have a vaccination card; dogs are not allowed on the tram or metro.
- To take out a policy, your pet must be microchipped and its details must match the official register.
Vets and travel
- Col·legi Oficial de Veterinaris de les Illes Balears (COVIB) — Based at Av. Comte de Sallent 2, Palma; directory of registered vets and clinics.
- Baleària offers pet-friendly cabins, seats for pets up to 8 kg in a carrier and kennels on deck; your pet needs its own ticket and a valid health booklet.
