Looking after your pet in Menorca
Menorca's unspoilt southern coves welcome dogs, as long as you are happy to walk. Cala Fustam, in Es Migjorn Gran, is about an hour on foot from Binigaus (or reachable by boat), and there are no facilities, so pack water and shade. If your walks take you through pine woods, look out for processionary caterpillars, whose stinging hairs can seriously injure a dog's mouth and tongue. Leishmaniosis, spread by sand flies, is the other risk to prevent.
Dogs must be identified on RIACIB within three months of birth; COVIB runs the register under an agreement with the regional government. Note that Ciutadella bans animals from its beaches from 1 May to 31 October, apart from authorised, signposted shared-use zones. With pet insurance in Menorca from Petplan, you can visit any vet in Maó, Ciutadella or Alaior; just pay the bill and get 100% of covered costs back, minus a fixed €45 co-pay.

Health: what to watch for
- Canine leishmaniosis, spread by sand flies, is common across southern Spain, the Mediterranean and the Balearics. Use repellents, ask about vaccination and test yearly with your vet.
- The pine processionary caterpillar is the main defoliator of local pine woods. Its stinging hairs can severely injure a dog's mouth and tongue, so avoid pine areas with processions.
The policy asks you to keep your dog's official vaccinations up to date, including leishmaniasis. With the Health + Vaccines plan we refund the cost, up to €90 a year.
Microchips and rules
- In the Illes Balears, microchips are recorded in the Registro de Identificación de Animales de Compañía de las Illes Balears (RIACIB).
- Dogs must be identified within three months of birth. RIACIB is run by the Balearic Veterinary College (COVIB) under an agreement with the regional government.
- Ciutadella bans animals from beaches from 1 May to 31 October, except in authorised, signposted shared-use zones (bylaw amended in 2024).
- To take out a policy, your pet must be microchipped and its details must match the official register.
Vets and travel
- Col·legi Oficial de Veterinaris de les Illes Balears (COVIB) — Based at Av. Comte de Sallent 2, Palma; directory of registered vets and clinics.
- Baleària offers pet-friendly cabins, seats for pets up to 8 kg in a carrier and kennels on deck; your pet needs its own ticket and a valid health booklet.
