How your policy renewal works: notice periods and what can change

Most questions about pet insurance come up when you take the policy out, but one moment gets overlooked: renewal. Knowing what happens when your policy turns a year old, how much notice we give you and what can change saves you surprises and lets you decide in good time.

Renewal is automatic

Your policy renews automatically so you do not have to worry about it. There is nothing to arrange and nothing to take out again: unless you tell us otherwise, cover carries on for another year.

Once your pet was insured before the upper age limit for joining, you can renew with no age limit. When your dog or cat turns 7, the policy stays in force for the rest of its life, subject to the renewal policy.

We write to you at least 60 days before

Before the policy expires we write to you at least 60 days in advance, with all the details of your premium and the policy conditions for the coming year.

That letter is the moment to review things. You have two months to read what we are proposing and decide whether to carry on, without rushing and without the date creeping up on you.

What can change at renewal

At renewal we may change the premium or the co-payment (the excess), add exclusions, or amend the General and Particular Conditions of the policy. That is why it is worth reading the whole letter and not just the amount.

What does not change because you have used the insurance is the price: we never raise the premium as a result of claims. It only rises in line with inflation or for reasons that affect every pet of your pet’s breed.

If you do not want to renew

If you would rather not carry on, you simply need to tell us at least 30 days before the expiry date.

We also have the right not to renew a policy. If that happens we tell you in writing at least 60 days in advance, so you have room to react.

The receipt, not a new policy

Once you have renewed, the document that proves it is the receipt: it carries the updated date and amount, and you can download it from your customer area.

The original policy always stays as it is; a new one is not issued with new details. If it still shows the old date, that is not a mistake: the receipt is all you need.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to do anything to renew?

No. Renewal is automatic unless you tell us otherwise.

How much notice do you give me?

At least 60 days before expiry, with the premium and conditions for the coming year.

Does the price go up if I have claimed?

No. The premium never rises because of claims, only with inflation or for breed-wide reasons.

How do I sort out questions about my renewal?

By email, so it is in writing and you always have the information to hand.

Renewal is not something to be endured; it is a decision you make with two months’ notice and all the information in front of you. If you do not have insurance yet and want to know what your premium would be, working it out takes less than a minute.
