How your pet insurance premium is calculated: breed, age and area

puppy-french-bulldog-and-cat-min

Two dogs of the same age, in the same city, can pay different premiums. It is not arbitrary: the price of pet insurance is built from a few specific pieces of information. Knowing what they are helps you read your quote and avoid comparing apples with oranges.

What goes into the calculation

To work out your premium we take into account your pet’s individual breed, its age, the cost of veterinary services in your area and other factors we weigh up together.

The aim is that you pay a fair price reflecting the likelihood of claims. We have spent 47 years insuring pets around the world, and that experience is what lets us fine-tune the calculation.

Why age counts for so much

Older dogs and cats, just like people, are more prone to illness. That is why insuring them costs more than insuring a young animal.

Age also governs joining: we can take on dogs and cats up to 7 years old and rabbits up to 5. Once your pet is in, the policy renews with no age limit, subject to the renewal policy.

Breed, one by one

Not every breed costs the same, and they are not grouped by size or looks: the calculation goes breed by breed, because each one has its own history of health problems.

Some breeds do not even appear on our sign-up site, because the price would be excessive to offer in Spain. For a few of them the annual premium works out at 945.88 euros as a puppy and 1,039.87 euros between one and two years old.

Your area counts too

Veterinary costs are not the same everywhere in Spain, and the premium reflects that. If surgery or a scan costs more where you live, the insurance still has to be able to cover it.

It is the same logic that makes the cover worth having: the bill is set by your vet, not by us, and you choose which vet to go to.

What pushes the premium up, and what does not

What never pushes it up is your claims. We do not raise the price as a result of claims, however much you have used the policy during the year.

The premium only rises in line with inflation or for reasons affecting every pet of your pet’s breed. In other words, with how veterinary costs evolve, not with your own record.

Frequently asked questions

What determines my price?

The specific breed, the age, the cost of vets in your area and other factors.

Why is an older pet more expensive?

Because it is more likely to fall ill, just as happens with people.

Will my price go up if I use the insurance?

No. We never raise the premium because of the claims you make.

Why can I not find my breed on the site?

Because for some breeds the price would be excessive, so we do not include them online.

Understanding the calculation is mainly useful for one thing: comparing properly. A price only means something when you know what it covers, and with Petplan it covers 100% of the bill up to 3,100 euros a year from 0.70 euros a day. Working out your quote takes less than a minute.
