Looking after your pet in Las Palmas
Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura enjoy mild weather all year, so some beaches welcome dogs in every season. Bocabarranco in Telde is dog-friendly year-round but has no lifeguard and strong currents, while Las Coloradas in Yaiza opens to dogs only 7-10am and 7-9pm. Sun and wind mean bringing water and shade. The big health concern is heartworm, more common here than in most of Spain; leishmaniosis, by contrast, is uncommon locally.
Dogs must go on ZOOCAN within three months of birth or one month of acquisition. Alongside the Las Palmas Veterinary College, the province has the ULPGC university veterinary hospital in Arucas, open 24 hours. Fred. Olsen inter-island ferries take pets with a pre-booked ticket. Petplan pet insurance in Las Palmas lets you use any vet in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Arrecife or Puerto del Rosario: pay the bill and receive 100% of covered costs back, minus a fixed €45 co-pay.

Microchips and rules
- In Canarias, microchips are recorded in the Registro Canario de Identificación Animal (ZOOCAN).
- Dogs must be identified and registered within three months of birth, or within one month of acquisition.
- In 2026 Arrecife is in the process of approving two dog beaches (El Cable and La Cruz), closed to dogs from 1 February to 1 July to protect nesting Kentish plovers.
- To take out a policy, your pet must be microchipped and its details must match the official register.
