Looking after your pet in Gran Canaria

Eastern coves such as Tres Peos, a black-sand beach in Agüimes, let dogs swim all year round on Gran Canaria, as does its pebbly neighbour Los Cuervitos. In Telde, Bocabarranco is dog-friendly year-round too, but has no lifeguard and strong currents. Heartworm is the main health threat, more common here than in most of Spain, so give monthly prevention and test yearly. Leishmaniosis is uncommon on the island.

The ULPGC university veterinary hospital on the Arucas campus is open 24 hours, with emergency care for dogs and cats. Dogs must be registered on ZOOCAN within three months of birth, and Fred. Olsen inter-island ferries take pets with a pre-booked ticket. Petplan pet insurance in Gran Canaria lets you use any practice in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Telde or Arucas: pay the bill and get 100% of covered costs back, minus a fixed €45 co-pay.
