Looking after your pet in Santa Cruz de Tenerife
Across Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro, volcanic coastline gives way to cooler uplands, where summer walks are easier on dogs. For a swim, El Puertito in Güímar has about 200 m of calm water for dogs, while El Confital at El Médano is often very windy. Heartworm, more common here than in most of Spain, calls for monthly prevention and a yearly antigen test.
Dogs must be registered on ZOOCAN, and the official vets' body is the Colegio Oficial de Veterinarios de Santa Cruz de Tenerife. In the capital, a 2025-26 study found dog zones feasible at Las Teresitas and Añaza, but the current bylaw still restricts dogs on beaches. With pet insurance in Santa Cruz de Tenerife from Petplan, you can use any vet in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Arona or La Orotava: pay the bill and get 100% of covered costs back, minus a fixed €45 co-pay.

Health: what to watch for
- Heartworm, spread by mosquitoes, is more common here than in most of Spain. Monthly prevention and a yearly antigen test are recommended.
- Studies show canine leishmaniosis is uncommon here, but if you travel south or to the Mediterranean with your dog, protect it against sand flies.
Microchips and rules
- In Canarias, microchips are recorded in the Registro Canario de Identificación Animal (ZOOCAN).
- Dogs must be identified and registered within three months of birth, or within one month of acquisition.
- Santa Cruz de Tenerife: a 2025-26 study found dog zones feasible at Las Teresitas, Las Gaviotas, Añaza and others, but the current bylaw still restricts dogs on beaches.
