Looking after your pet in Lanzarote

Lanzarote's volcanic ground heats up fast, so keep an eye on your dog's paws on walks. There are two dog beaches: Guacimeta at Playa Honda (San Bartolomé), about 165 m beside the airport with no time limits, and Las Coloradas in Yaiza, open to dogs only 7-10am and 7-9pm. Leishmaniosis is uncommon on the island, but if you travel south or to the Mediterranean with your dog, protect it against sand flies.

Arrecife is in the process of approving two more dog beaches, El Cable and La Cruz, which will be closed to dogs from 1 February to 1 July to protect nesting Kentish plovers. Dogs must be registered on ZOOCAN within three months of birth, and the local professional body is the Las Palmas Veterinary College. With pet insurance in Lanzarote from Petplan, you can use any vet in Arrecife, Teguise or Tías, pay the bill and get 100% of covered costs back, minus a fixed €45 co-pay.
