Looking after your pet in Granada
Life with a dog in Granada can mean city streets, the Sierra Nevada mountains or the Costa Tropical between Motril and Almuñécar. In the city, the council dog zones in Parque García Lorca and Parque Carlos Cano are fenced and fitted with tunnels and slalom courses. Summers here are among Spain's hottest, so walk early or late and carry water, and protect against leishmaniosis, spread by sand flies, with repellents, vaccination and a yearly test.
Dogs and cats must be microchipped within three months of birth and registered on the RAIA. The Colegio Oficial de Veterinarios de Granada offers a vet finder, a lost-pet service and a link to the register. Petplan pet insurance in Granada lets you choose any vet practice, whether in Granada city, Motril or Baza: you pay the bill and we refund 100% of covered costs, minus a fixed €45 co-pay.

Health: what to watch for
- Canine leishmaniosis, spread by sand flies, is common across southern Spain, the Mediterranean and the Balearics. Use repellents, ask about vaccination and test yearly with your vet.
- Summers here are among Spain's hottest. Walk your dog early or late, carry water, and take extra care with puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds.
- The pine processionary caterpillar is the main defoliator of local pine woods. Its stinging hairs can severely injure a dog's mouth and tongue, so avoid pine areas with processions.
The policy asks you to keep your dog's official vaccinations up to date, including leishmaniasis. With the Health + Vaccines plan we refund the cost, up to €90 a year.
Microchips and rules

- Dogs and cats must be microchipped within three months of birth. RAIA is managed by the Andalusian Council of Official Veterinary Colleges.
- To take out a policy, your pet must be microchipped and its details must match the official register.
