Euthanasia and disposal of remains: what pet insurance reimburses

senior - Petplan

It is the part of the policy nobody wants to read and that, when the moment comes, everybody is glad to have clear. Petplan’s cover includes a reimbursement for the costs of putting your pet to sleep and disposing of its remains, and there is also a separate contract for the individual cremation service.

What the policy reimburses

Petplan reimburses the costs of euthanasia and disposal of the animal’s remains up to a maximum of €200. It appears in the policy as a cover with its own limit, like the other compensations.

It is not the only cover tied to a pet’s death: the policy also pays the value of the dog, up to a maximum of €600, if it dies from an accident or from illness.

How the claim works

It works like the rest of the policy. You take your pet to the vet you choose, you pay the invoice, and then you send us that invoice together with the vet’s report.

The amount is paid by transfer into your bank account. There are no approved vets and no fixed panel: free choice of vet applies here too.

The individual cremation service

Separately from the reimbursement, there is a contract for an exclusive individual pet cremation service with full recovery of the ashes. It has its own documentation, separate from the general conditions of the health policy.

The service covers collection of the pet, individual cremation, recovery of 100% of the ashes, an eco-friendly urn, the cremation certificate and delivery of the urn.

Where it sits within the policy

These covers sit alongside the main one, which is the reimbursement of veterinary costs from illness or accident: 100% of the invoice, up to €3,100 a year, with an excess of €45 per illness and not per visit.

As in the rest of the policy, pre-existing conditions are not covered, and the waiting periods are 15 days for accidents and 30 days for illnesses.

The documents worth locating

The general conditions explain how the insurance works, what it covers and what it does not, and the IPID sums the same up in a short document every insurer must give the customer before taking out a policy.

The individual cremation service contract is a separate document. The full list of exclusions is in the policy itself, and all the documentation is published on the website.
