Which vet consultations your pet insurance covers (and which it does not)

Before buying pet insurance, the question that comes up most is a simple one: when I take my dog, my cat or my rabbit to the vet, will the consultation be paid for? With Petplan the answer depends on the reason for the visit, not on the size of the bill. Here is what is in and what is out.

What counts as a covered consultation

Petplan covers any type of veterinary consultation brought on by an illness or an accident. There is no closed list of complaints: what defines the cover is that there is an illness or an accident behind the visit.

The cover applies equally to dogs, cats and rabbits, the species Petplan insures. And you can go to the vet of your choice, with no approved network and no assigned clinics.

The visits that are not included

Routine or preventive visits, deworming and neutering or spaying are left out. They are planned care rather than the consequence of an illness or an accident, which is why they are not part of the cover.

Pre-existing conditions are not included either, meaning anything your pet already had before the policy was taken out. No pet insurance in Spain covers them, and neither does Petplan.

What is paid on top of the consultation itself

A consultation rarely comes alone. Petplan also reimburses the medicines your vet prescribes and those given during the consultation itself, as well as tests, lab work, radiographs, X-rays, ultrasound scans and diagnostic procedures.

If the visit leads to something bigger, the policy stays with you: surgery and nursing, hospitalisation, physiotherapy, prosthetics, behavioural disorders, cancer treatments and hip dysplasia.

How much you get back for each consultation

The reimbursement percentage is 100 %, with an annual maximum of 3,100 euros. No percentage is shaved off the invoice: you get it back in full within that limit.

The co-payment (excess) is 45 euros per illness, not per visit. If one illness means several consultations, the co-payment applies once rather than at every appointment.

When you can use it and how you are paid

Cover does not start on the day you sign up: the waiting period is 15 days for accidents and 1 month for illnesses. Once that period has passed, the consultation is covered.

The process is straightforward: you take your pet to the vet, pay the invoice and send us that invoice together with the vet’s report. We pay the costs by transfer into your bank account.

Frequently asked questions

Does the policy cover any consultation?

It covers any type of veterinary consultation for an illness or an accident. Routine or preventive visits are left out.

Is the annual check-up included?

No. The annual check-up is a preventive visit and is not covered.

What about vaccinations?

They are not part of the health policy. You can add the optional vaccination plan, which reimburses up to 90 euros a year.

Do I pay the co-payment at every visit?

No. It is 45 euros per illness, not per visit.

If you are comparing policies, look at two things in the small print: which consultations are included and how much of each invoice comes back to you. With Petplan every consultation caused by an illness or an accident is included, at 100 % and up to 3,100 euros a year, from 0.7 euros a day.
