Looking after your pet in Girona
The Costa Brava keeps most beaches dog-free in summer, so dog life in Girona moves between off-season coves, the volcanic Garrotxa and the Pyrenees. Platja de Sant Jordi in Llançà is a small, quiet cove, while in Girona the council's Ter dog route runs about 1.8 km along the river, and the Carrilet greenway links the city with Olot via Salt. Leishmaniosis, spread by sand flies, is the main risk: use repellent, ask about the vaccine and test yearly.
Dogs, cats and ferrets must be microchipped and listed on the AIAC register. The Girona Veterinary College (COVGi) offers guidance on identification, pet travel and potentially dangerous dogs, and Renfe lets dogs up to 40 kg travel without a carrier on AVE and long-distance trains. With pet insurance in Girona from Petplan, you can choose any vet in Figueres, Olot or Blanes: pay the bill and get 100% of covered costs back, minus a fixed €45 co-pay.
