Looking after your pet in Barcelona
Wedged between the Mediterranean, Collserola and the Montseny, the province of Barcelona mixes beaches with mountain walks within an hour of the city. In summer several beaches set dog hours: the fenced Platja de gossos de Llevant in Barcelona opens 10.30am-7.30pm in the bathing season, and Platja del Far in Vilanova i la Geltrú allows dogs 9am-8pm. In pine woods, watch out for processionary caterpillars, whose hairs can injure a dog's mouth.
Microchipping is compulsory for dogs, cats and ferrets, and logged on the AIAC register. The Barcelona Veterinary College (COVB) offers a vet centre finder, and the UAB university veterinary hospital is in Cerdanyola del Vallès. Renfe lets dogs up to 40 kg travel without a carrier on AVE and long-distance trains (€40 supplement). With pet insurance in Barcelona from Petplan, you can use any vet, including in Terrassa, Sabadell and Badalona: pay the bill and get 100% of covered costs back, minus a fixed €45 co-pay.
