The smallest of the four Swiss mountain dogs, it owes its name to Entlebuch, a region in the canton of Lucerne (Switzerland). Swiss cattlemen developed it to drive and guard cattle: it took the herds up to the summer pastures, watched over them and brought them down in winter.
