A dog that cannot bear being left alone, or a cat whose habits change from one day to the next, does not always have a passing problem. Once the vet treats it as a behavioural disorder, the natural question is whether the insurance responds or whether this falls outside.
They are inside the cover
Behavioural disorders appear explicitly among the veterinary expenses Petplan covers, alongside consultations, diagnostic tests and hospitalisation. No add-on or optional plan is needed for them to count.
It is a cover that not every policy on the market includes, so it is worth looking for it in the list of covered treatments when you compare insurance for your dog or cat.
Prescribed medication is included too
Petplan pays for the medicines your vet prescribes, as well as those given during the consultation. Very few insurers in Spain cover medication, and it is one of those clauses that needs reading in the small print.
With a behavioural disorder that detail matters, because treatment may combine consultations with whatever medication the vet considers appropriate.
How much comes back, and the excess
The reimbursement rate is 100%, with a maximum of 3,100 € a year. You pay the invoice, send it to us with the vet’s report, and we transfer the amount to you.
The co-payment (excess) is 45 € per illness, not per visit. For a condition that needs several follow-up consultations, that means a single excess rather than a fresh one at every appointment.
Waiting periods and pre-existing conditions
Petplan’s waiting period is 15 days for accidents and 1 month for illnesses. Until that time has passed, the cover is not yet active.
And as with any pet insurance in Spain, pre-existing conditions stay outside: whatever your dog or cat already had before the policy began is not covered, Petplan included.
Getting advice without waiting for the next appointment
If something worries you and you cannot reach your usual vet, Petplan gives you access to veterinary telephone assistance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
There is also a chat with licensed vets from Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 18:00, where you can send images or videos, and a video consultation by appointment in those same hours, useful when the thing worrying you is visible.
Frequently asked questions
Does the insurance cover behaviour consultations?
Yes. Petplan covers any kind of veterinary consultation for illness or accident, and behavioural disorders are on the list of covered treatments.
What about the medication the vet prescribes?
That is included as well. Petplan pays for medicines prescribed by your vet and those given in consultation, within the 3,100 € annual limit.
Do I pay an excess at every follow-up visit?
No. The 45 € excess applies per illness and not per visit, so the same condition does not generate a new one at each appointment.
Can I call at night if things get worse?
Yes. The veterinary telephone assistance service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
