A blood test is the basic tool for finding out what is going on inside your dog or cat: it detects infections, anaemia, kidney or liver problems, diabetes and parasite-borne diseases. It is also usually done before an anaesthetic.

Key facts

  • At a university vet hospital, a complete blood count costs €35 and biochemistry €25 to €55 depending on the number of parameters.
  • A pre-surgery profile with blood count and biochemistry costs €85; with an ECG, €105.
  • Petplan reimburses 100% up to €3,100 a year when the test is part of treating an accident or illness.

How many parameters are measured, whether specific tests are added (thyroid, leishmania, pancreatitis) and whether the sample is analysed in the clinic or sent to an external lab.

How much does Petplan cover?

Petplan Spain reimburses 100% of the invoice up to €3,100 a year, with a €45 co-payment per illness or accident, at the vet of your choice. It does not cover pre-existing conditions or preventive care, and there are waiting periods of 15 days for accidents and 30 days for illness.

The policy includes examinations and diagnostic tests within veterinary treatment. Routine check-ups without symptoms are preventive care and are not covered.

Frequently asked questions

Does my dog need to fast before a blood test?

Usually a few hours, because food changes some biochemistry values. Ask your vet.

How often should an older dog have a blood test?

It depends on its health; many vets recommend one a year from a certain age. That preventive check is not covered by insurance.
