An X-ray is one of the most common tests at the vet: it shows fractures, swallowed objects, heart and lung problems or the state of the joints. Knowing what it costs helps you decide calmly when your vet recommends one.

Key facts

  • At a university vet hospital, a simple digital X-ray costs €35 and each additional image €15.
  • Contrast studies or the official hip dysplasia screening cost more.
  • Petplan reimburses 100% up to €3,100 a year when the X-ray is part of treating an accident or illness.

Reference prices (2026)

Item Price
Simple digital X-ray (first image) €35
Each additional image €15
Dental X-ray €20
Gastrointestinal contrast study €60
Official hip dysplasia screening (with sedation) €180

What makes the price vary?

How many images are needed, whether contrast or sedation is required to keep the animal still, and the type of clinic. A hip or spine study usually needs several views; a suspected foreign body may need contrast.

How much does Petplan cover?

Petplan Spain reimburses 100% of the invoice up to €3,100 a year, with a €45 co-payment per illness or accident, at the vet of your choice. It does not cover pre-existing conditions or preventive care, and there are waiting periods of 15 days for accidents and 30 days for illness.

The policy expressly includes tests and X-rays within veterinary treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Does my dog need sedation for an X-ray?

Not always. A calm animal can simply be held; some views, such as the hip, need sedation.

Does insurance cover X-rays?

Yes, when they are part of diagnosing or treating a covered accident or illness, not as a preventive check.

Indicative prices. Spain has no official price scale and each clinic sets its own fees: these are the public prices of a university veterinary hospital, and other clinics may charge differently.
