Main characteristics
Dogs of this breed are usually about 28 centimetres tall, weighing between 7 and 10 kilos. Their white and uniform tone is one of their main hallmarks, having a hard coat. It bears a great resemblance to some breeds, such as the Scottish Terrier. As for its life expectancy, they live about 13 years on average.
What makes them special?
They are fast, intelligent and bold dogs, who love their owner to be just like them and to want to play all the time. For this reason, you must bear in mind that they need to go out often.
One of the reasons that make them unique is being one of the breeds that get along very easily with strangers. Thanks to their affectionate and faithful character, they adapt well to family life. Even so, they can be a little mischievous and, above all, stubborn. They get on quite well with children and are friendly with other dogs.
Specific care
One of the most necessary care measures is related to their sight. They are prone to suffering from conjunctivitis, so it is essential to check their eyes daily for sleep and, if there is any, to remove it carefully. Regarding the coat, it is advisable to take them to the vet regularly to remove dead hair or to cut their coat.
In the same way, they have a tendency to suffer from atopic dermatitis, so it is essential to bathe them at most once a month. Important: you must always use specific products that are neutral and gentle.
In general and according to experts, keeping them usually has a moderate cost, which makes it ideal for the home.
Main illnesses
This breed is prone to suffering from some specific illnesses. That is why, if you have one, it is essential that you go to the vet at least twice a year. That will allow you to check that it is in perfect condition and, if necessary, to act in time.
Westie jaw
The westie jaw is one of the most common. It is a hereditary disease that usually appears in puppies between 3 and 6 months old and consists of an abnormal growth of the bone located in the jaw. Although it tends to disappear when they reach their first year, it requires treatment with anti-inflammatories to avoid pain and feeding difficulties.
Copper toxicosis
You also have to watch out for copper toxicosis, which can lead to hepatitis. It is caused by a gene that does not allow the liver to eliminate copper.
Keratoconjunctivitis sicca
Finally, as we said, this breed is prone to suffering from conjunctivitis. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca is a variety of this disease that can become chronic, as well as very painful.
