Reasons Why You Need Pet Insurance

Razones por las que necesitas un seguro de mascotas

If you have the pleasure of sharing your life with one or more pets, you will be aware that this involves a series of duties and responsibilities. While this burden is well worth taking on, it must be done while always being aware of how important it is to provide these little ones with security and quality of life. To you they are not just an animal: they are another member of the family to whom, like everyone else, you try to offer the best. For precisely that reason, have you thought about the benefits that taking out pet insurance offers you?

Why take out pet insurance

The emotional bond that ties you to your pet is especially powerful. There is nothing comparable to the love these little ones give us or to the loyalty that characterises them. They are always waiting at home to greet us with displays of affection and to give us their company. Without asking for anything in return.

That is the greatest gift for those of us who love animals. But besides being endearing creatures, their wellbeing depends entirely on us. We have a duty both to feed them and spend time with them and to look after their health and take care of any setbacks that may arise.

With pet insurance we will be protected against the incidents or unforeseen events that may occur – both regarding the health of our furry companions and the possible damage they might cause. It is worth noting that in Spain taking out this type of policy is only mandatory for those responsible for dangerous-breed dogs. However, that is not the only case in which our pet can cause some kind of damage, so having this insurance will give us peace of mind in that respect.

As is well known, veterinary services have a cost – sometimes quite a high one – and we cannot always cover this financial outlay with complete ease. Taking out this kind of insurance will mean a notable saving at veterinary clinics, since by paying the premium we will be covering our pet should they suffer an illness or have an accident.

How can veterinary insurance help you?

This will depend on the insurance company and the type of policy taken out. However, with the highest-quality ones, you will get these benefits:

  • Civil liability towards third parties: you are responsible for the damage your dog causes. In the case of an attack by the animal, both material and physical damage would be covered. This coverage is often included in home insurance.
  • Accident insurance for pets: in the event of an accident, it would cover the vet’s bills for the treatments for the injuries your dog suffers. But it does not cover illnesses.
  • Veterinary insurance for pets: veterinary treatments will be covered whether your dog suffers an accident or an illness. The treatments are the vet’s bills for the consultation, diagnostic tests, surgical operations, post-operative care and so on. Bear in mind that some procedures exceed €1,000.

How does veterinary insurance work? It is simple: you go to the vet, pay the bill and send it to the insurer, and they reimburse you the amount of those bills.

Apart from these basic coverages, there are insurers that offer you even more coverage, as is the case with Petplan, such as the following:

  • Freedom to choose the vet you prefer, whereas other companies limit it to a few, or penalise you if you do not go to their vets.
  • Payment of the medication prescribed by the vet.
  • Cost of rehabilitation or behavioural-disorder treatments.
