Does pet insurance cover a prosthesis for your dog or cat?

Perro paseando en España cuyo dueño cuenta con seguro de responsabilidad civil

A prosthesis is one of those invoices that gives anyone pause before taking out insurance. The short answer is that prostheses appear on the list of treatments covered by Petplan’s health insurance.

Prostheses are on the list of covered treatments

Among the items that are covered, the Petplan policy expressly names prostheses, alongside surgery and nursing, hospitalisation, diagnostic procedures and hip dysplasia.

That means the expense is not left waiting for a later assessment: it falls under the policy like any other treatment arising from an illness or an accident.

How much you get back

Petplan reimburses 100 % of the vet’s invoice, with an annual maximum of €3,100 and a co-payment (excess) of €45 per illness, not per visit.

That detail matters in a case like this, because a prosthesis is not a single visit: it generates consultations, tests, surgery and follow-ups. The excess applies to the illness and is not charged again on each one of them.

The waiting periods to respect

Petplan’s waiting periods are 15 days for accidents and one month for illnesses. Until they have passed, the cover is not active.

And the rule with no exceptions: no pet insurance in Spain covers pre-existing conditions, meaning those your dog or cat already had before taking out the policy. Petplan does not cover them either.

Tests and rehabilitation

Physiotherapy is also among the covered items, as are X-rays, ultrasound scans and the tests, blood work and radiographs needed to assess the case.

The medicines your vet prescribes, and those given during the consultation, are reimbursed too, which very few insurers in Spain include.

What is not covered

Besides pre-existing conditions, the policy does not cover deworming, neutering or sterilisation, or routine and preventive visits.

The full list of exclusions is in the policy, and it is worth reading carefully before taking out any pet insurance.
