A primitive breed from the south-eastern United States, considered a descendant of ancient dogs brought to North America by early settlers thousands of years ago. It lived free-roaming in the swamps and forests of South Carolina and Georgia. Dr I. Lehr Brisbin «discovered» it in the 1970s and was key to its recognition by the United Kennel Club in 1995. It is loyal and deeply bonded to its «pack».
