Taking out pet insurance online takes a minute, and sometimes the doubt arrives afterwards: what if I picked the wrong product, or the wrong pet, or simply moved too fast? Petplan has a specific window for undoing the decision at no cost, and it is worth knowing exactly how long it lasts and what closes it.
The first 14 days: the window to get your money back
For 14 days after the policy is issued you can cancel it and Petplan refunds the amount paid. It is the period designed for anyone who changes their mind shortly after buying.
It is not a window negotiated case by case: it is a fixed period that starts running when the policy is issued, not with the first payment and not with the first trip to the vet.
The condition that can close it early
The refund comes with one requirement: that you have not processed a claim. If you have already submitted a claim for expenses within those 14 days, the refund no longer applies.
The logic holds: the period exists so you can withdraw from a policy you have not used, not to recover the premium after drawing on the cover.
How to cancel
A Petplan policy can be cancelled at any time, not only during the first two weeks. The request is made in writing from the customer area.
That “in writing” matters: stopping payment is not enough, and neither is a verbal notice. The request is logged from your own customer area, which is also where you can change your personal or payment details.
What happens if you cancel later
Cancelling outside the 14-day period does not entitle you to a refund of the premium. The policy is annual, and cancelling afterwards does not return the amount covering the contracted year.
That is why the 14 days are the moment when the decision is still reversible at no cost. After that, the sensible move is to review what the policy covers before cancelling, because the year’s money is already committed.
When the clock starts
Cover begins at 00:00 on the day after you take the policy out, when you receive the Particular Conditions, unless you have asked for a different date. From there the waiting periods run: 15 days for accidents and 1 month for illnesses.
As for payment, the policy is annual but the health cover can be split into 3 interest-free instalments, which changes neither the start date nor the 14-day period.
Frequently asked questions
When do the 14 days start counting?
From the issue of the policy.
Can I cancel the policy at any time?
Yes. The request is made in writing from the customer area.
Do I get my money back if I have already made a claim?
No. The refund requires that no claim has been processed.
What if I cancel halfway through the year?
Cancelling outside the 14 days does not entitle you to a refund of the premium.
If you have just signed up and you are unsure, check the issue date of your policy before anything else: it marks the only stretch in which the decision can still be undone in full.
