Beagle: all the care you need to know

Beagle: todos los cuidados que necesitas saber

Beagle dogs are undoubtedly among the most special dogs in existence. Since their origin, in England, they have not stopped spreading all over the world. The reasons for their peculiarity are varied, and have to do with their character, their friendly appearance and many other aspects.

Particularities of the breed

Below, we explain what differentiates these beagle dogs from other dog breeds.

Main characteristics

As far as their size is concerned, they do not usually measure more than about 40 centimetres in height, nor weigh more than 15 kilos. Most of them are light brown in colour, but they tend to have white, black and, in short, all the colours that hounds can have.

In addition, they tend to live for about twelve years and, according to statistics, their maintenance cost is rather moderate.

What makes them special?

With regard to their character, they are very lively and cheerful, and are always eager to play. They are very energetic and show great intelligence. Originally in England, the beagle was used as a hunting animal. Nowadays, however, it is a companion dog like any other.

However, nowadays, it is a companion dog like any other. In fact, it could be said that having one of them at home is an adventure for their owners, as you will become their favorite playmate.

These dogs hate being alone for long periods and are often alert, so it’s common to hear them howl. While they can be stubborn, they are natural explorers. You’ll always see them discovering new spots around the house, sniffing unfamiliar objects, and approaching strangers to get to know them. At the same time, they are very good with children, so being in contact with a child to play with will make them even happier.

Specific Care for Beagles

One of the most important aspects of caring for a Beagle is providing them with games that involve chasing or hunting a toy. After all, this was their traditional role—so it’s in their genes!

Additionally, due to their shape, their ears are prone to infections, so it’s essential to clean and check them once a week. Beagle ear care is very important.

You should also clean—or even trim a little—their eyelashes, as they are very long and can become uncomfortable.

Common Health Issues in the Breed

Here are the diseases Beagles are most prone to:

Eye Conditions

Their eyesight is delicate. In fact, they tend to develop cataracts, which can lead to total blindness. They also suffer from glaucoma, which causes progressive vision loss due to increased eye pressure.

Skin Conditions

Their skin can also develop issues. They often suffer from atopic dermatitis, caused by infections, and demodectic mange (or red mange), which leads to hairless and irritated patches.

Pulmonary Stenosis

Another genetically predisposed condition in this breed is pulmonary stenosis, a narrowing of the valve at the exit of the right ventricle.

As you can see, Beagles are an ideal breed whether it’s your first time owning a dog or you’re already an experienced pet lover. Above all, remember that having a dog comes with great responsibility, and it’s essential to take them to the vet at least twice a year to ensure everything is okay. Petplan is always there for whatever you and your pet may need.
