Looking after your pet in Murcia
With the Mediterranean on one side and the Mar Menor on the other, the Region of Murcia has dog beaches in several towns, but its summers are very hot, so walk early or in the evening and carry water. Las Moreras in Mazarrón is open to dogs all year, and Las Salinas in Los Alcázares has a marked-off area on the Mar Menor. Heartworm, spread by mosquitoes, is more common here than in most of Spain: use monthly prevention and test yearly.
Pets are recorded on the Región de Murcia companion animal register; a pet arriving with an incompatible identifier needs a new microchip within 30 days. The University of Murcia's veterinary hospital at Espinardo takes emergencies 24 hours a day, all year. Petplan pet insurance in Murcia works with any vet practice, in Murcia, Cartagena or Lorca: you pay and receive 100% of covered costs back, minus a fixed €45 co-pay.
