The Yorkshire terrier is a particularly special breed of dog, formed by crossing Scottish and English terriers after the Industrial Revolution. At first, it was incredibly popular as a show dog, but later it began to be seen as what it is today: a companion animal (not in vain, it was the most popular breed in the United States in 2002). Do you want to know what is the care for a yorkshire terrier and what makes it different? Find out below.
Particularities of the breed
Main characteristics of the yorkshire terrier
This type of dog is distinguished by its small size, weighing less than 3 kilos. At the same time, it has a coat that alternates grey and brown tones, with long, abundant and shiny hair. They usually live for about ten years and have a mischievous, but also affectionate character.
They do not need a lot of space (also due to their small size), although they do need exercise. With regard to food, they consume between 70 and 90 grams of feed per day, which means that the cost of their food is not particularly high.
What makes them special?
This is a question that the owners of a Yorkshire will know how to answer perfectly well, as one of the most striking things is that they are not usually afraid of larger breed dogs such as Dobermans or German Shepherds.
In the same way, they are not spiteful, although sometimes they can show a bit of bad temper. Another of the curiosities of these dogs is that many of the people who have one end up adopting more animals of the same breed. It must be for a reason!
Specific care of the yorkshire terrier
Brushing is one of the most important issues, as it must be combed daily to prevent tangles from forming. As for bathing, they should be bathed about twice a month (always with a specific shampoo for their hair).
In the same way, it is important to tie back their fringes with an elastic or a small lock so that they do not get in their eyes or make it difficult for them to see.
Special care should also be taken with their teeth, as small breed dogs are more likely to suffer from bacterial infections in their teeth.
Main diseases
Like other dogs, this breed is also prone to specific diseases. Most of these are linked to irresponsible care, but there are others that can arise for a variety of reasons.
Retinal dysplasia
Retinal dysplasia is an abnormal development of the retina, resulting in visual impairment or blindness. There is currently no treatment.
Tracheal collapse
This is a narrowing of the trachea causing a dry cough that usually occurs after physical exercise or after eating or drinking water. It is controlled by medication.
Portosystemic shunt
A defect in the circulation of the liver that tends to occur when the animal is a puppy. This can result in intoxication of the dog and, in some cases, neurological problems. It is treated by surgery.
