Large dogs are those that, on reaching adulthood, weigh more than twenty kilograms. As you can imagine, greater size also means a greater need for food, for room to move around and, therefore, more expense. But if you bear in mind these five basic care needs for large breeds, you’ll share your life with a big dog that is healthy, balanced and happy.
Food tailored to their needs
The metabolism of large dogs is slower than that of small ones. They develop more slowly, but they age earlier. That’s why it’s essential to choose a food specially formulated for your pet’s weight, age and nutritional needs. As for nutrient content, make sure fats and proteins are balanced, so your dog gets enough energy but doesn’t put on weight. It’s also worth choosing one made with easily digestible ingredients that includes some supplement, but without excess.
Clean and healthy
Although it depends on the dog’s activity and where it lives, large breeds generally don’t need baths as often as small ones. To keep your dog clean, it’s enough to set up a basic hygiene routine for the ears, eyes and teeth. If you also brush it regularly with a comb suited to its coat type and keep the nails at the right length, you’ll only need to bathe it occasionally.
Sturdy toys and leads
When you choose toys for your dog, always check that their size and hardness are right for its jaw. Otherwise, not only is there a chance it will destroy them straight away, but they can even become dangerous, because the dog could hurt itself or swallow a piece.
Likewise, harnesses and leads need to be comfortable for both of you, as well as safe for walks.
Early training and socialisation
The sooner you start working on your dog’s training and socialisation, the much easier it will be to raise a happy adult. Even though as a puppy it’s very cute and clumsy, bear in mind that before long it will weigh more than twenty kilos and be much harder to handle.
