The Šarplaninac (Yugoslavian Shepherd Dog, also called the Illyrian Shepherd) is a large livestock guardian dog originating in the Balkans. Strong, brave and thick-coated, it has guarded flocks in the mountains of south-eastern Europe for centuries. Origin and history of the Šarplaninac
The Šarplaninac comes from the region of the Šar Mountains, in the former Yugoslavia (between present-day North Macedonia and Serbia). For centuries it has worked as a flock guardian dog, protecting livestock from wolves and other predators in high-mountain terrain. It is a rustic breed, very resistant to cold thanks to its dense double coat, and it is recognised by the FCI. Outside the Balkans it remains uncommon.

Temperament and behaviour
It is a calm, self-assured and independent dog, deeply loyal to its family and to the animals it protects. Reserved and wary of strangers, it is a brave guardian that acts on its own initiative. It needs early socialisation and firm, respectful guidance. It is not a dog for flat living: it requires space and a purpose.
Most common health problems of the Šarplaninac
As a large, deep-chested dog, it is worth keeping an eye on hip and elbow dysplasia and on gastric dilatation-volvulus (bloat). In general it is a rustic and very hardy breed. Keeping a healthy weight, splitting meals and having regular veterinary check-ups help to detect any problem in time.
Care and feeding
Its dense double coat needs frequent brushing, especially during seasonal moults, to keep it healthy and free of knots. Take care of ear cleaning, dental hygiene, nails and pads, and keep vaccinations and deworming up to date. Give it quality food suited to its large size and split the ration into several servings to reduce the risk of gastric torsion.
Exercise and stimulation
It needs moderate daily exercise and, above all, space to move and a job to do. It is not a dog of great athletic endurance, but it is a tireless worker when on guard. A dog that moves and “thinks” every day is a more balanced dog: the right amount of activity prevents boredom, stress and being overweight.
