Pregnancy, birth and breeding: what pet insurance doesn’t cover

If you are thinking about breeding, or your dog is already pregnant, it is worth knowing where that stands with the policy. The short answer is that Petplan’s health insurance does not cover anything related to breeding, pregnancy and birth.

What the exclusion list says

Among the things the insurance does not cover, the policy expressly names treatment related to breeding, pregnancy and birth. It is not a nuance: it sits outside the policy as a category.

That reaches the monitoring of the pregnancy and the assistance at birth. It is an expense worth budgeting for separately, because it does not enter the reimbursement.

Sterilisation is out too

The other side of the same coin is also excluded: sterilisation and castration are not covered, just like preventive treatment such as vaccines and deworming, and routine or preventive visits.

Petplan’s health policy is built around the unexpected, around illness and accidents. What is elective and planned stays outside.

What does stay covered

The pregnancy being excluded does not leave your pet without cover for everything else. The policy covers consultations for illness or accident, prescribed medicines, tests, lab work and X-rays, diagnostic procedures, surgery and nursing, hospitalisation, prostheses, cancer treatments, hip dysplasia and physiotherapy.

If an illness or an accident unrelated to the breeding appears during that period, it is handled like any other claim on the policy.

The puppies in the litter

Each animal needs its own policy. You can insure a dog or a cat from 2 months old and up until it turns 7; for rabbits the entry limit is 5 years.

If you keep more than one, Petplan applies 10% from the second pet insured on the health policy. And once insured within that age, the policy can be renewed with no age limit for the animal’s whole life.

How the reimbursement is worked out

For what is covered, Petplan reimburses 100% of the vet’s invoice, with a maximum of €3,100 a year and a co-payment (excess) of €45 per illness or accident, not per visit.

It is also worth remembering that treatment your pet receives more than 12 months after the date the injury happened or the illness began is not covered either.
