Having your dog healthy and happy is your main aspiration as its owner. To help you achieve it, here are some basic prevention keys to avoid scares in your dog’s care.
Healthy feeding
Good feeding is essential to prevent health problems. As well as choosing a suitable feed according to your dog’s age, weight and activity level, it is highly advisable to opt for a high-end one. These feeds are made with meat as the first ingredient, are free of wheat and corn and also have a low percentage of potato or rice. You will be able to buy them in pet specialist shops and veterinary clinics. At the same time, you must be careful about what your dog puts in its mouth. There are a number of foods that are very dangerous for them, such as onion, garlic, sweeteners or grapes, which can even be lethal.
Clean and strong teeth
Teeth are a part of your dog you must pay great attention to. If they are not cared for properly, your pet can develop tartar, bad breath, gum inflammation and other very painful problems. To care for its mouth every day and not reach those extremes, you can offer it toys made of nylon or rubber to chew. There are also special treats, made with the aim of serving as a dental cleaner. Likewise, once a week, it is advisable to brush its teeth with a brush and specific paste for dogs (never use toothpaste that is not for them). If you get it used to this from a puppy, this routine can also become a moment of connection between the two of you.
Clean and parasite-free
Keeping the coat well cared for and the nails at the appropriate length is another way to prevent future scares. If you bathe your dog at home, use a shampoo special for its type of coat and that respects its natural oils and coat, which will help it remove dust and dead hair, keeping it shiny. With this very simple gesture, you can prevent itching, irritation and even dermatitis or scratching wounds. Do not forget either to deworm it periodically, following the instructions of the manufacturer of the collar or pipette you have chosen and of an expert vet.
Physical and mental exercise
Sharing quality time with your dog from the start will help minimise the appearance of future behavioural problems. Through enriching walks, games and logic exercises, you will strengthen the bond between you and get your dog to be more confident, more patient and have more tolerance for frustration. If you need help with any behavioural problem, do not delay in seeking the help of a professional ethologist. The sooner you tackle the problem, the less complicated it will be to solve.
The vet: your best ally
For any doubt or symptom that worries you, do not hesitate to consult your vet. Never give your dog medication for human use or that has not been prescribed by a professional.
