The Istrian Coarse-haired Hound comes from the Istrian peninsula in Croatia and is one of the oldest scenthound breeds in the Balkans. It has traditionally been used to hunt hare and fox by following the scent, both in a pack and individually. Its harsh coat protects it from undergrowth and the elements. It is recognised by the FCI and is uncommon outside its country of origin.

Temperament and behaviour
It is a docile, steady dog at home but tenacious and tireless when following a scent. It combines a strong hunting instinct with a calm, friendly temperament towards its family. It needs patient guidance and plenty of activity; well socialised, it usually gets on well with people and other dogs, especially if raised in a pack.

It is generally a hardy, robust breed. Because of its drop ears, it is worth watching for ear infections, as well as the hip dysplasia common in medium-sized breeds. As with any active dog, regular veterinary check-ups and good physical condition help catch any problem early.

Its harsh coat needs regular brushing and occasional tidying or hand-stripping to keep its texture; the beard should be kept clean after meals. Pay attention to keeping its ears clean, as well as to dental hygiene, nails and pads, and keep vaccinations and deworming up to date. Provide quality food suited to its activity level.
Exercise and stimulation
It is a hunting dog that needs plenty of daily exercise and, ideally, activities that put its nose to work. It is not the best choice for a sedentary life. A dog that moves and “thinks” every day is a more balanced dog: the right amount of exercise prevents boredom, stress and excess weight.
