Are you worried because your dog does not want to eat kibble? We know that it can be exasperating, since you are concerned that it is not feeding properly and ends up getting ill.

First make sure it does not have any health problem and follow these simple tips. You will see how it starts to enjoy its food very soon.

Avoid substitute foods

First and very importantly, do not replace the kibble with another food. Dogs quickly learn from our reactions and take not eating as a behaviour pattern, since they know that you will soon give them another, tastier food.

Try other kibbles

Perhaps your dog does not like that particular kibble. There is a wide variety of types on the market. Have it try a different one and this will tell you whether it does not like dry food in general or that specific product. Always make sure to choose a good-quality kibble.

Progressive change of diet

If your dog’s diet was based on wet food, snacks or homemade food, the most advisable thing is to start by mixing these foods with the kibble, progressively reducing their amount.

Hunger is a good ally

Do not worry if your dog goes up to two days without eating. Make sure it has water and stay firm without offering it alternatives. It is a method that gives very good results, but it is important that you strictly follow these rules:

– Do not give it any kind of food for two days, offer it only kibble and water.

– If after this time it still does not eat, give it a little to avoid a drop in glucose (but keep it hungry). Appetite will be the key factor for it to start accepting its new way of feeding.

Take advantage of its sense of smell

Use your dog’s sense of smell to make the kibble something more appetising for it. Scatter it around the room so that it discovers it by sniffing. A way that, in addition, adds a bonus of stimulation to the process.

Disguise the kibble a little

Mix it with a little warm water, rice, oil, wet food or chicken broth. Remember that it is better to avoid ingredients such as salt or onion, since they can be toxic for our pet.

Create a routine

Getting your dog used to a daily routine is also a good solution. Always serve it the same amount of food, at the same time and place. After half an hour, remove it and do not offer any more until the next scheduled meal. The moment will come when it understands that this is the only food you will give it, so it will end up accepting the situation.

Stimulate its appetite with exercise

Walk your dog every day. This way, it will use up energy and increase its appetite.

The most important thing is to be patient and not despair. It is a process that requires time and discipline. If you take these tips into account, you will surely get your dog to eat kibble very quickly and start to enjoy a healthy and balanced diet.
