Developed in the late 19th century by Count Adolf Hamilton, founder of the Swedish Kennel Club, who sought a strong, hard-working dog to hunt foxes and hares. He crossed the Harrier with the English Foxhound and three now-extinct German breeds. It was first shown in Sweden in 1921. It is friendly and even-tempered at home, though sometimes a little wary of strangers.
