A lump on the skin is one of the most common reasons to take an adult dog to the vet. The price of removing it depends mainly on the size of the mass and on how much skin has to be reconstructed.
Key facts
- At a university vet hospital, removing a skin tumour costs €50 to €300 depending on size, with simple reconstruction included.
- The price includes up to 24 hours of observation and two check-ups, but not the pre-anaesthetic assessment (€30), the anaesthetic or the biopsy (€60).
- Petplan reimburses 100% up to €3,100 a year if the lump is not pre-existing.

What makes the price vary?
The size of the lump and the amount of skin that has to be reconstructed, which is what separates the four price levels. On top of that come the anaesthetic, the pre-anaesthetic assessment and the tests to find out what the lump is. If the surgery is an emergency, this hospital adds a 25% surcharge.
How much does Petplan cover?
Petplan Spain reimburses 100% of the invoice up to €3,100 a year, with a €45 co-payment per illness or accident, at the vet of your choice. It does not cover pre-existing conditions or preventive care, and there are waiting periods of 15 days for accidents and 30 days for illness.
In the conditions, veterinary treatment includes tests, diagnostic procedures and surgery, and Coverage 1 covers treatment for illness and for accidental injury. If the lump was already there before you took out the policy, it is a pre-existing condition and is not covered.
