Surgery for a mammary tumour in a dog can mean removing two or three glands or the whole mammary chain. The price depends on that extent and on the dog’s weight.
Key facts
- At a university veterinary hospital, a radical mastectomy of the full chain costs €280 to €340 depending on weight, and a half chain of 2 or 3 glands costs €160 to €220.
- The surgery price includes up to 24 hours of observation and two check-ups, but not the pre-operative assessment or the anaesthesia. If an ovariohysterectomy is done at the same time, the mastectomy is halved.
- Petplan reimburses 100% up to €3,100 a year if the tumour is not pre-existing.

What makes the price vary?
The extent of the surgery and the dog’s weight, which changes the price of both the mastectomy and the anaesthesia. If an ovariohysterectomy is performed in the same procedure, the hospital halves the mastectomy. Surgery does not include biopsies, cultures or complementary tests, and emergency surgery carries a 25% surcharge.
How much does Petplan cover?
Petplan Spain reimburses 100% of the invoice up to €3,100 a year, with a €45 co-payment per illness or accident, at the vet of your choice. It does not cover pre-existing conditions or preventive care, and there are waiting periods of 15 days for accidents and 30 days for illness.
The policy covers the surgery a vet performs to treat an illness. Sterilisation is excluded unless the procedure is carried out because your pet has an injury or illness and is essential, so an ovariohysterectomy done in the same procedure is only included if the vet confirms this. If the lump was already there before you took out the policy, it is a pre-existing condition and is not covered.
Frequently asked questions
How much does mammary tumour surgery cost in total?
At this hospital, for a medium dog of 10 to 24 kg with a radical mastectomy: €300 for the surgery, €120 for inhalation anaesthesia of up to 2 hours and €30 for the pre-operative assessment. That is €450 in total, without biopsies or complementary tests.
Is it cheaper if the dog is spayed at the same time?
The mastectomy is: the hospital halves it when the ovariohysterectomy is done in the same procedure. But the ovariohysterectomy costs €280 and is added, so the total bill is usually higher than the mastectomy alone.
