What happens in the most common situations

A broken leg at your usual vet

Real case, €2,380 bill: with Petplan you pay €45; with Milo, outside its network, €476.

A French Bulldog with breathing problems

Milo excludes any treatment related to brachycephalic syndrome. Petplan covers it if it is not pre-existing.

A holiday with your dog

Milo cuts your limit to €1,500 a year, at 80%. With Petplan nothing changes: 100% and €3,100.

A testicular tumour

Milo excludes neutering for any reason. With Petplan, if neutering is the essential treatment, it is covered.

When might Milo suit you?

So you can decide with all the facts:

  • If your usual vet is one of its 587 partner clinics, where it pays 100%.
  • If you want cover for accidents sooner: Milo's waiting period for accidents is 9 days, against Petplan's 15.

If you want 100% of every bill back at any vet, the same cover abroad, and congenital and behavioural conditions covered, Petplan is the better choice.

Thermometer for your vet

What happens to your usual vet if you choose Milo?

There are more than 7,000 vet clinics in Spain. Some insurers only work with a few hundred of them. Milo pays 100% only at its 587 partner clinics; anywhere else, 80%.

  • Your vet loses the client

Policies with a vet network and set prices: they pay nothing back at your usual clinic, so the client ends up at their network clinics.

  • Your vet will almost certainly lose the client

At their partner clinics the client pays nothing; at the usual clinic they pay upfront and get 80% back. They will go where they do not have to pay.

  • Your vet will lose the client sooner or later Milo

They pay 80% at any clinic but 100% only at their own. With the first expensive bill, the client switches.

  • Your vet keeps the client Petplan

Reimbursement at any vet. The client stays with their usual vet, and the insurance helps the clinic keep them.

How much would I pay for a broken leg with each insurer?

On a real €2,380 bill at your usual vet, you pay a €45 excess with Petplan. With Milo, outside its network, it pays back 80% and you pay €476.

What happens if I travel abroad with my dog?

Milo halves your cover outside Spain: from €3,000 to €1,500 a year, at 80%, and only for trips of up to 3 months within Europe and Mediterranean countries. With Petplan, travelling does not change your cover: the same 100% and the same €3,100 annual limit.

Does Milo cover congenital conditions?

No. Milo excludes any congenital disease or anomaly (such as hemivertebrae, congenital luxating patella or congenital heart defects), and any treatment related to brachycephalic syndrome, which matters if you have a French Bulldog, English Bulldog, Pug or another brachycephalic breed. Petplan covers congenital and hereditary conditions that are not pre-existing.

Does Milo cover behaviour or physiotherapy?

No. Milo does not cover behavioural problems or physiotherapy. Petplan covers both.

What waiting periods does each insurer have?

Milo: 9 days for accidents, 28 days for illness and 2 months for surgery after an illness, but 6 months for very common conditions such as cruciate ligament rupture, hip or elbow dysplasia, luxating patella, allergic dermatitis, epilepsy, leishmaniasis, hernias or cataracts. Petplan: 15 days for accidents and 30 days for any illness.

Does Milo cover neutering?

No. Milo excludes neutering for any reason, even when it is needed because of an illness. With Petplan, if neutering is the essential treatment for an illness or injury, such as a testicular or ovarian tumour, it is covered.

What happens if my dog dies or is stolen?

Milo does not pay anything for death, loss or theft, and only covers euthanasia when it is medically necessary; it does not cover boarding if you are hospitalised. Petplan pays up to €600 for death, up to €600 for theft and up to €600 for boarding.

Can I insure my cat or rabbit?

With Petplan, yes: we insure dogs, cats and rabbits. Milo only insures dogs.

Who is behind each insurer?

Petplan has insured pets since 1976: more than 25 million pets insured; the risk is underwritten by Telefónica Seguros. Milo is a digital broker with barely a year of activity (it completed its first year in September 2026), selling dog-only health insurance; the risk is underwritten by Europ Assistance.

Does Milo cover prostheses and implants?

No. Milo excludes prostheses, implants and artificial joints, except osteosynthesis implants (the plates and screws used to fix a fracture).
