What happens in the most common situations

A broken leg

Real case, €2,380 bill at your own vet: with Petplan you pay €45; with Mapfre, €596.

Hip dysplasia

Common in breeds such as Labradors, German Shepherds or Golden Retrievers. Mapfre excludes it. Petplan covers breed-related conditions.

Treatment at home

After a visit or an operation, your vet prescribes medication to give at home. Mapfre doesn't cover it; Petplan does.

Your pet has had an operation

Mapfre's vet cover does not accept pets that have ever had surgery, unless it expressly authorises it. Ask before you sign up if your pet has been operated on, including neutering.

When might Mapfre suit you?

So you can decide with all the facts:

  • If one of Mapfre's partner clinics is near you and you're happy to use it: there you pay nothing for covered treatment.
  • If you only want accident cover: Mapfre also sells an accident-only policy, with up to €1,000 per accident.
  • If you want your vet cover, third-party liability and legal defence all with the same general insurer.

If you want to keep your own vet, have medication and breed-related conditions covered, and a higher annual limit, Petplan protects you better.
